Notes from the Founders – Sept Oct 2012

We can’t believe Summer is almost over! It was hot one minute, rainy the next, but all in all, it was a good one. The kids kept us busy running from oneAngel & Becky activity to the other, which meant downtime at the beach and the lake was twice as nice.

But honestly, our favorite time of year is almost here. Fall brings cooler weather, football games, school events and the anticipation of all the best holidays. But before, there can be Fall…there must be the Wilson County Fair!

And this year, Wilson Living’s Dr. John Gallaher brings us the tastiest fair treats that can be found at our Fair.

He had loads of fun working on this article as is evident by the photos. And we had fun tagging along, trying out all the unbelievable fair food with him!

Food seemed to be a running theme this issue as Ken Beck brought us a wonderful piece about Sunset Restaurant. Sunset is a Wilson County staple, not only because of their renowned down home comfort food, but also because of their family hospitality. Read all about this family business as Ken visits with multiple generations in Meet Your Neighbor.

Have you heard about a new book making its rounds around Wilson County? Sheriff Terry Ashe just published his new book, Ashes of Bluebird, and sat down for a Q & A session with our own Becky Andrews. Read all about his life, career and the many moments along the way that have shaped this man today.

And, just in case you missed our awesome cover, this is the Bachelorette issue!! We had the best time at our photo shoot with all these gorgeous ladies. They are not only amazing on the outside but also on the inside. These are some very smart, talented women and we thank the many of you who sent us emails nominating them.

As you read through our pages, you might see some changes. That’s because we’ve shaken things up at Wilson Living. We’ve expanded our staff and added offices within The Wilson Post. We’re growing by leaps and bounds and with new people, come new ideas. We are glad to have them and hope you can pick out their talents inside these pages.

Until next time, stay cool and keep reading!

Notes from the Founders – July Aug 2012

It’s getting just as hot in the Wilson Living office as it is outside. Since 2008, many in the United States have been affected by the sluggish economy. Instead wlm foundersof wallowing in our own situations, whatever they may be, many decided this was a perfect time to donate time to help those who have it even worse. While any type of volunteer work is fantastic – not only for your own health and psyche – some have taken the act of volunteering to the next level. One of those folks is Wilson County resident, Greg Holbrook. After a mission trip to Africa in 2003, Greg had the vision to start, Miracle POWER. The goal of Miracle POWER is to offer assistance to the pastors, orphans and widows who happen to be among the poorest people in the villages of Kenya, Africa. Check out his inspiring story and see how Wilson County is helping Greg change lives thousands of miles away.

Also included in this issue, readers will get an intimate look at the Home and Garden of Wilson County residents, Denise and Lynotte Moore. We will give you a peek into the beautiful garden their youngest daughter chose to hold her wedding.

It has come to our attention that men sometimes get left out of topics covered by Style and Trends Editor, Erin Brown. Well this time Style and Trends is all about the men! Erin showcases the best looks for men of any age and how to dress cool and professional this summer.

Don’t forget to check out our blogs at www.wilsonlivingmagazine.com. We’ve added 2 new bloggers. Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Robbie Whitaker will be answering all of your mental health questions and Wilson County resident, Jennie Burton will be sharing all of her healthy eating tips on her new blog, ‘Happier Healthy.’ It’s all on www.wilsonlivingmagazine.com.

Until next time, stay cool and keep reading!

Notes from the Founders – May June 2012

In just a few short weeks, 2012 will be half over! Can you believe it? The weather in Middle Tennessee has been gorgeous and that means most of us arewlm founders busy shuttling the kids between baseball, tennis and other outdoor activities. In the off chance you have some spare time, check out the calendar of events on pages 8 & 9. There’s plenty going on in and around Wilson County.

Our new and improved website has been up and running for nearly two months now and thanks to our faithful readers, it’s a huge hit! We credit our bloggers with generating much of the traffic. So check out our website and check it often for blog updates, breaking news, events and to register to win some fantastic prizes at www.wilsonlivingmagazine.com.

May is stroke awareness month. To recognize this, we sat down with Wilson County resident and stoke survivor, Jason Gray. Jason and his wife, Danielle recount details of the days that led to doctors telling this healthy father of two he had five strokes. You will be inspired by how this family made it through a year riddled with hospital stays and tests and are now stronger than ever. Look for the story on page 10.

Styles and Trends are changing every day. Lucky for readers Wilson Living’s, Erin Brown, keeps up with all you need to know to be in the know. Check out what beauty products are hot for Spring on page 30.

We also have some delightful new recipes from Food Editor, Stacey Meadows and a new restaurant review from Dining with Doc, Dr. John Gallaher. Plus, a new article by Roy Harris that’s sure to inspire you, and one from our newest contributor, Randy Rudder.

Before we go, we’d like to wish all of the Moms and Dads a Happy Mother’s Day and Happy Father’s Day.

Until next time, keep reading!

Notes from the Founders – Mar Apr 2012

Time is flying in 2012. We are already almost in the second quarter of the year, and things are getting busy for everyone as outdoor team sports kick off,Becky & angel spring break for kids approaches and spring cleaning for the parent’s creeps up.
Proms and weddings are popular this time of year. And with that of course comes our very popular Bridal Issue!
Because we have such a good time planning, shooting and editing our wedding issue, last year we decided to share our love of weddings with the Inaugural Blushing Bridal Show. That very first show was such a success, Wilson Living is once again teaming up with The Mill at Lebanon and Party Providers to bring you the 2nd Annual Blushing Bridal Show. We have some great new additions to this year’s show including our special guest, Jay Qualls. Qualls owns and operates Maples Wedding Cakes. His amazing designs also landed him a spot on the TLC reality contest The Next Great Baker. So ‘Save the Date’ and join us on March 11th, at The Mill at Lebanon for the 2nd Annual Blushing Bridal Show. Tickets are on sale now at www.blushingbridalshow.com or at area Wilson Bank & Trust locations.
We’ve been talking about it for weeks, and now the time is here to meet the latest batch of single men. Style and Trends Editor, Erin Brown, has details on the Bachelors of Wilson County. These guys were so much fun on our photo shoot. We’re sure they won’t be single for long. Take a look at our video from the shoot on our new interactive website www.wilsonlivingmagazine.com.
Speaking of our new website, you must visit to see for yourself all the new bells and whistles we’ve added. One of our most anticipated new additions is the blogs. Our newly minted professional bloggers will cover everything from health and wellness to religion and politics. Look at Angel’s story for details on who will be blogging on the site.
Cake anyone? Food Editor, Stacey Meadows, shares her recipe for a new take on cake this issue. They’re called Cake Pops. Because we always test Stacey’s recipes – just to make sure they are safe to eat – we tried these little dollops of heaven, and they are SPECTACULAR! Plus, Roy Harris once again offers up inspiration for brides and grooms in his latest reflection.
Remember to visit www.wilsonlivingmagazine.com and our Facebook page for unbelievable giveaways! Before we go, we’d like to wish all the brides-to-be and their families good luck! Be sure to email us your photos at info@wilsonlivingmagazine.com, and you might just see yourself on our website. We are at the beginning of a new year which can be very symbolic. It’s like you’re given a fresh start. The slate is clean and this is the year to complete a project, start a new job or lose weight!

Notes from the Founders – Jan Feb 2012

We are at the beginning of a new year which can be very symbolic. It’s like you’re given a fresh start. The slate is clean and this is the year to complete a project, start a new job or lose weight!WLM - Angel & Becky

Wilson Living contributor, Roy Harris gives us a guideline of how we can use our time wisely in 2012 in his piece, ‘Tag You’re It’. We won’t give away details but most of our staff has already started following Roy’s advice on making 2012 the best year yet!

If you have a New Year’s resolution to lose weight (and honestly, who doesn’t!), check out Style and Trends Editor, Erin Brown’s suggestions for cool workout gear that will keep you stylin’ while you sweat. Erin gives excellent advice. Would you like more attention from Erin? You can get information on her personal styling services by emailing erin@ wilsonlivingmagazine.com.

(FYI-If you haven’t checked out Dreams Boutique located on the Lebanon Square, you’ll want to stop in to pick up pieces of their ultra-cool workout line Marika. Let’s face it, when you look good, the gym can be a little more bearable.)

As some of us prepare to start a new diet plan, this may not be the best time to bring up our Food section. ‘Dining with Doc’ gives us his review of another fabulous local eatery you might not know about.

As the New Year starts, we want you to own 2012! Shake things up! Complete that to-do list, take a class, play board games with the kids, give more (time, money, resources) to those less fortunate, take your children to help at Joseph’s Storehouse or the Nashville Rescue Mission. James Cash Penny, the founder of JC Penny Department Store said it best, “How can we expect our children to know and experience the joy of giving unless we teach them that the greater pleasure in life lies in the art of giving rather than receiving.” Let’s carry that spirit of giving and volunteering into 2012

Until next time, keep reading!!

Notes from the Founders – Nov Dec 2011

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! The crisp air and changing leaves stir up the holiday spirit in all of us. No matterwhat kind ofWLM - Angel & Becky year you had, there is something to be thankful for. At Wilson Living we are thankful for all of you. Over the past three years readers, advertisers and writers have become an extension of our own family. The holiday issue is always special to us as this was the season we first introduced readers to Wilson Living.

We have some fantastic stories for you that will enlighten, excite and hopefully, inspire. One of those stories is about a new program coming to several schools in Wilson County. Rachel’s Challenge was created by the parents of Rachel Scott. Rachel was the first student killed at Columbine High School when two of her classmates opened fire on the school in 1999. The contents of Rachel’s six diaries have become the foundation for one of the most life changing school programs in the country. And from November 7th through November 14th, six Wilson County schools will have the opportunity to participate in this program. Today, Rachel’s father and thirty other speakers criss-cross the nation spreading Rachel’s words, in hopes that there will never be another Columbine. Check out the story on page 48.

If you’re not in the mood to decorate just yet for the holidays, you will be after taking a look inside Wilson County resident, Elizabeth Scruggs’ home. Elizabeth is not just a wife and mother; she’s also the owner of Superior Design and Construction. Elizabeth will share her decorating tips and as a bonus, she’ll show us how to keep all that stuff organized. Seriously, she is AMAZING!

And what about that cover! It serves two purposes. One, for our Style and Trends Editor, Erin Brown to show readers that the styles and trends of the 1940’s and 1950’s have never gone out of style. And two, we picked the Lebanon square for the shoot so we could emphasize that our hometown square is becoming the heartbeat of Wilson County with incredible boutiques and textile shops… much like it was in the 1940’s and 1950’s.

The Wilson Living Magazine Holiday Expo is almost here. We are so excited about the new additions to this year’s expo. For starters, we will be hosting a very special, ‘Breakfast with Santa’ and a pre-opening shopping gala. For all the details, look for the story on page 8.

Thank you again for helping us enter our 4th year of publication! We couldn’t do it without every single one of you.

Until next time, keep reading!!

Notes from the Founders – Sept Oct 2011

It’s almost here. Our favorite time of year – fall! Soon the leaves will be changing and we can sit outside for more than five minutesWLM - Angel & Becky without worrying about heat stroke. The only thing more inviting than cooler temps, is all the events going on in Wilson County during September and October.

By now, you have all heard about Sherry’s Run. While you may be aware of the race and ‘Painting the Town Green’, you might not know the entire story behind the culmination of this fantastic event. You can read all about it on page 52. The run is named for Sharon “Sherry” Patterson Whitaker. Whitaker was diagnosed with and lost her battle with colon cancer in 2004. A few of her friends and family members wanted everyone else to know the person they loved and wanted to bring awareness to this deadly disease. While Sherry lost her battle with cancer, her spirit lives on today with this run. If you haven’t already registered, better hurry! You won’t want to miss it.

Construction on the new Lebanon High School is well underway. If that has any of you LHS graduates feeling a little melancholy, there’s something you can do that might make you feel better. The Lebanon High School Alumni Association is selling individual
bricks. A personalized brick inscribed with your name or that of a relative or friend who graduated from Lebanon High School will become a permanent fixture in the rotunda walls of the new school building. Money from this project will also help establish a Lebanon High School Endowment Scholarship fund for future LHS graduates each school year. For more information on how to get your brick, read the story on page 26.

And now is the time to mark your calendars for the 3rd Annual Wilson Living Holiday Expo on November 18th and 19th at The Mill at Lebanon. Just like in years past, this year’s expo promises Santa, Shopping and of course, plenty of Swag. If you are interested in reserving a booth, we are nearly out of room so you better hurry. Call 615-969-6751 to reserve your space. We have some big surprises this year including a special breakfast with Santa, a celebrity guest and plenty of giveaways.

Until next time, keep reading!!
